My dogs found a skunk last night after 7 pm. It being late on a Sunday and living in the country, I lacked the necessary ingredients and convenient store to correct the problem. I did what I could with what I had. Now I'm taking vacation this afternoon to go home and clean the dogs and the house. I realized at work that my jacket smells like skunk. Yuck!

Anyway, here's my mom's recipe for cleaning skunk off dogs. It works pretty good. This is a per dog (medium to large sized) recipe.

1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 tsp liquid soap

Mix together and pour on the dog. Let stand at least 5 minutes to soak in. Rinse them off. Mom usually covers their eyes to keep the stuff out.

Sigh... damn it smells in the house. I didn't figure it out until they were inside. At least the one knew it and went into the shower right away.

You should be able to substitute the Oxiclean or other powder (sodium peroxides) for the hydrogen peroxide. They will be a little less hash on the dog's skin. ....

I always heard the canned tomato juice works well to neutralize the smell. ....

One of my "dummies" got hit with a skunk spray head on about 3 weeks ago. Needless to say, he did NOT come back in the house. It was cold but my wife put some hay in a dog house for him and she washed him with tomato juice twice. Each time it took a lot of the stink out of the dog but he still smelled horrible. When she got the stink down to a strong stench; I let him stay in the garage at night for about 2 weeks and she shampooed him again and he is allowed back in the house but he still stinks like hell. ....

Tomato juice does not work The perxiode and baking soda does. It actually chemicaly reacts with the skunk oil. You need to leave it on for 5 or 10 minutes prior to washing it off. ....

The dogs smell better with one worse than the other. I also used my carpet extractor to wash the upstairs carpets. Lots of work, but it is smelling better inside. I guess I'm getting spring cleaning done early.

Then this morning, meathead is going nuts inside the fence. I look out and there is something short and black waddling away in the field. Me thinks the skunk is hanging around. If he hangs around too much he's liable to suffer from lead poisoning. ....
